About This Place

Located on the first floor of 39 Chepstow Place in the heart of London’s W2 district, Assaggi Restaurant brings a refined slice of Italy to the city with an inspiring menu that emphasizes authentic ingredients and impeccable technique. Specializing in Italian cuisine, this elegant yet cozy eatery invites diners to savor the nuanced flavors of expertly crafted dishes paired with a warm, intimate atmosphere that feels both exclusive and welcoming.

Step inside and you’ll find a beautifully simple dining room that basks in natural light through west-facing windows, setting the stage for relaxed yet sophisticated meals. The quiet environment—devoid of background music or distractions—allows for easy conversation, making Assaggi a perfect spot for everything from celebratory dinners to intimate gatherings.

The menu showcases a rich array of Italian classics and inspired daily specials, each prepared with meticulous care. Begin your experience with antipasti like the Culatello, one of Italy’s finest hams served alongside caramelized baby onions, or the uniquely textured Seppia con Carciofo, a tender cuttlefish paired with a braised artichoke heart and squid ink. For those who appreciate fresh, vibrant starters, the Insalata di Pere melds sweet pear with robust pecorino cheese, walnuts, and pomegranate to create an unforgettable harmony of flavors.

Pasta lovers will find exceptional satisfaction in choices like Tagliolini alle Erbe e Noci, where delicate durum wheat pasta is sautéed with nine herbs, Parmesan, and crushed walnuts, creating a fragrant, earthy dish that lingers pleasantly on the palate. The Fregola con Frutti di Mare offers a joyful textural contrast with its course couscous-like grains and fresh seafood. For something both comforting and innovative, the Gnocchi alle Ortiche blends homemade potato gnocchi with nettles, butter, Parmesan, and a hint of lemon zest to sublime effect.

For main courses, Assaggi shines with a selection of carni and pesci that elevates every bite to an art form. The Branzino alla Griglia, a whole chargrilled sea bass, is lauded by patrons as a must-try, boasting fresh, smoky notes balanced by the simplicity of the preparation that lets the natural flavors sing. Meat enthusiasts will appreciate the Fegato di Vitello, pan-seared calf’s liver accompanied by crispy sage and shallots, or the sumptuous Carré di Agnello, a perfectly cooked rack of lamb that delivers tender, rich satisfaction. Those who enjoy refined raw dishes will find the Carpaccio di Manzo an exquisite choice, featuring thinly sliced raw beef with parmesan shavings and wild rocket leaves that meld freshness with umami intensity.

End your meal on a sweet note with Italian classics like Panna Cotta or Affogato, or opt for a celebratory slice of the restaurant’s house-made Birthday Cake. To complement the food, a carefully curated drinks list offers refreshing selections such as the iconic Aperol Spritz and comforting Jasmine Tea to round out the dining experience.

Guest reviews consistently praise Assaggi not only for its impeccable food but also for its attentive and authentically Italian service. As one diner remarked, “A place to watch... of a Michelin standard” thanks to its perfectly executed dishes and inviting setting. Others cherish the peaceful ambiance where “you can easily have a conversation without shouting,” a rare find in bustling London eateries. While some note the menu leans towards seafood, the high quality of each offering ensures a memorable meal worthy of special occasions.

Overall, Assaggi is a vibrant celebration of Italian culinary heritage wrapped in a refined yet approachable package. It invites both locals and visitors to slow down, savor each bite, and experience Italy’s rich flavors in the heart of London.

Only the upstairs was open, up a steep flight of stairs. Not too busy thankfully - a few local dowagers and a table of Americans. The food was excellent but with a preponderance of fish. Would have been nicer to have more meat options. Very much Notting Hill prices but ok for a special occasion. The staff were friendly and attentive and speak Italian as did most of our table. We were the last to leave but not put under pressure to do so.

Simple but great cuisine. I had an amazing fresh grilled seabass. Burrata for starter and tuna tartare. Tiramisu is really light and delicious. Good wine selection! The place is really nice too, i would add warm lights and candles! Was not easy to read the menu!

We went for diner in this italian restaurant near to Kensington gardens. The service is very good. We felt very confortable even in a pretty empty place. Food is good, but it is no special. I got the orecchiette , which was ok. Maybe too expensive…
